Pretoria Hockey Club has been around since 2004, but under a different name for the first few years. It was born when a group of young men, all of whom had played hockey at high school and ended up coaching primary schools players, wanted to get back to playing. As happens with most clubs, we've had our ups and downs with a notable "up" being competing in the men's premier league for a few seasons.
At the end of the 2015 season the club's management, under the leadership of chairman Martin Williams, decided that it was time to initiate the next "up" phase in the club's history. This was when we entered into negotiations with Wonderboom Hockey Club. Until the end of the 2015 season we were always a men-only club and Wonderboom was always a women-only club. The result of our negotiations was that the two clubs amalgamated and will in future participate as Pretoria Hockey Club with both men's and women's teams. It is from that basis that we aim to grow the club into a force to be reckoned with in Northerns.
Our first objective for 2016 was achieved when we were able to enter three teams in the Northerns league – men's first and second teams and a women's team. We have some ambitious plans for 2017, with the club moving to a new home base at Eldoraigne High School in Centurion. We plan to enter five teams in the league this year, building on our vision to become one of the top clubs in Northerns
